As the CEO of Inclusion Canada, Krista Carr is a voice for Canada’s disabled and vulnerable communities. As part of her advocacy, Krista has testified on parliamentary committees as well as having launched a lawsuit on the discriminatory practices of Track Two MAiD.
In her own words, “This law also sends a devastating message that life with a disability is a fate worse than death... It’s time to put an end to helping people with disabilities commit suicide and start supporting them to live.”
During a hearing at the Veterans Affairs Committee, former CAF Artillery Gunner Kelsi Sheren testified that she knew of at least 20 veterans that had been offered MAiD and some had even been pressured into accepting it. Alarmingly, she claimed that many had remained silent out of fear.
Mark Meincke is the host of Operation Tango Romeo, a trauma recovery podcast for veterans, and is himself a veteran. As part of his advocacy, he shares the stories of veterans who don’t wish to be named. Recently, he testified at the Veterans Affairs Committee, sharing the story of a veteran whose caseworker offered him MAiD and told him that they had “done it before” to other veterans.
Christine Gauthier has been living with a disability since she was severely injured during her time in the military. But she didn't let that stop her. Christine has become a five-time world-champion paralympic kayaker.
She spent five years trying to get funding for a wheelchair lift from Veterans Affairs. Rather than provide her the support she needed, a case worker offered her MAiD. Christine refused the offer and recently shared her testimony before the Veterans Affairs Committee.
