Nancy & Richard's Story

Nancy and her husband Richard* experienced something no Canadian family should have to endure during the final months of Richard’s life. While Richard was receiving treatment at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Alberta, they were repeatedly encouraged to pursue assisted suicide, despite clearly and consistently refusing.

According to Nancy, discussions about assisted suicide were brought up several times during Richard’s final month in hospital. She recalls that doctors and hospital staff continued raising the option even after they had firmly said “no”. Paperwork explaining the process was left in their hospital room, and a psychologist also visited them to discuss it.

What disturbed Nancy most was the way assisted suicide was described. She says staff painted an almost romantic picture of the process, telling them Richard could die peacefully surrounded by family, even with his beloved pets nearby. At the same time, Nancy says they were also given graphic descriptions of the painful death Richard might otherwise experience if they declined assisted suicide.

For Nancy and Richard, this repeated pressure during an already devastating time felt deeply wrong. They believed vulnerable patients and families should receive compassionate care, support, and dignity, not continued suggestions to end one’s life after already refusing.

Despite the pressure they experienced, Richard never chose assisted suicide. Months later, he died naturally and peacefully, holding his wife’s hand.

Nancy now shares their story because she believes Canadians deserve a healthcare system focused on care, compassion, and respect for the vulnerable, especially during life’s most difficult moments.
